Used by the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy in World War Two, these oval tags first came into use around 1917.

The P1917 was used by the U.S. Navy and seagoing Marines (Marines serving on ships) during World War One and the between wars period. Information on them was handwritten and acid etched, including a finger print on the reverse. This process involves the use of hazardous chemicals and I will not preform this process for you. I can provide a link for you on how it is done. Do so at your own risk.

The P1940 came into use just before World War Two and information was usually machine stamped into them. Stocks of P1917's were often used up.

These are machine made replicas cut to shape using an original blank as a guide. I know of no one else offering these replica tags.
Sets of two tags were wore on a white cotton cord in boot camp. Later in the field, they wore worn with the cord dyed green, or worn on a boot lace, dog tag chain or plastic covered cable.
Custom printed (marked) dog tags contain the following information:

First line -- Your last name;

Second line -- The first initial of your first and middle names;

Third line -- Your serial number and religion (C=Catholic; P=Prodestant & H=Hebrew);

Fourth line -- Your blood type (There was no blood factoring, positive or negative, in WWII);

Fifth line -- Date of your tetnus shot;

Sixth line -- Service you are in (USMC, USMCR (reserve), USN or USNR).

These tags come in sets of two individual tags. There are a total of two tags per set. Choose from:

The 1917 Pattern (one hole in tag); or
The 1940 Pattern (one hole on each end of the tag for a total of two holes in each tag).

A dog tag necklace is now a trendy fashion accessory, but it was never designed with fashion purposes in mind. The metal dog tag necklace was first introduced back in 1906 for the American military.

Today, there are many variations on the original dog tag necklace with major fashion houses and jewelry manufacturers putting their on spin on this military inspired design. The DT1 Dog Tag is one of the more popular styles. Most choose to add a 3mm sterling silver dog tag bead chain.

The original metal military dog tag necklaces were the size of a silver half dollar, they were stamped with the name, rank, company, regiment, or corps of the wearer. All those in the military were required to wear them whenever the field kit was on. The tags were worn on a chain or cord underneath the clothing.
